2006 Wellness Fair has a healthy impact on students

Released: November 1, 2006

More than 300 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater students and faculty attended the Wellness Fair last Wednesday, Oct. 25.  With 25 organizations in attendance, students were able to get a good sense of the many different healthy activities and organizations they can get involved in at college.

"The committee thought the fair was a complete success," Coordinator for Aquatics and Fitness Jen Kaina said.  "There certainly was a captured audience knowing that there are health, physical education, recreation and coaching majors within the Williams Center.  We also appreciate the support of the faculty and staff sharing their class time and bringing their students up to the fair."

"I think it was a good idea to have a Wellness Fair," senior Kelly Corgiat said.  "It's a fun learning experience because you get to learn about some new healthy habits that you may or may not have ever tried or even thought of."

"I came to the Wellness Fair because I wanted to learn more about health, lifestyles and changes for things I can make to better my life as a whole," senior Jason Breest said.  "The fair helps make people more knowledgeable so they can make better health choices."

Among the many organizations in attendance, Recreation Sports also promoted its many different health services and activities that it offers on campus.

"I am here to support group cycling and Recreation Sports to show people that there are many different and fun ways to get in shape," second year graduate student and group cycling fitness instructor Kelli Danielski.

As a follow up to "Choose Your Own Adventures," Recreation Sports, Chartwells and the University Health and Counseling Services will sponsor the "Shape Up for Spring" event in spring 2007.

"This event is geared around getting people out of the winter 'funk' so-to-speak," Kaina said.  "In Wisconsin we tend to hibernate throughout the winter months, but then expect for lose the 'extra layers' quickly.  'Shape Up for Spring' is designed to provide healthy tools to do it the right way because we all know that you can't lose 20 pounds in a week to get ready for spring break."
