Matthew Kiederlen named new chief of police

Matthew Kiederlen, operations commander at Northern Illinois University's (NIU) department of public safety, will be the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's next chief of police.
"Matthew's extensive experience at NIU makes him particularly well-suited to work with the students and staff at UW-Whitewater," Interim Vice Chancellor of Administrative Affairs Randy Marnocha said. "He understands the unique challenges of working on a college campus."
Kiederlen comes to UW-Whitewater from NIU with 14 years of police experience. In his current role as lieutenant and operations commander, he manages the overall operations of the department, including patrol, criminal investigations, civilian employees and community policing initiatives.
"I'm looking forward to being in an environment where people want what is best for the students," Kiederlen said. "There is a real concern for the campus community at UW-Whitewater."
He said he is impressed with how satisfied the UW-Whitewater community and the police department are with one another. "It's not often you meet an individual who has been arrested and still feels that the police department provided fair and appropriate treatment."
Kiederlen holds an associate's degree in law enforcement from Kishwaukee Community College and a bachelor's degree in management and leadership from Judson College in Elgin, Ill. He is currently completing his master's degree in law enforcement and justice administration from Western Illinois University.
He will assume chief of police duties April 1, 2007. Kiederlen is currently serving as acting chief of police in the absence of NIU's Police Chief Donald Grady who is serving in Iraq. Sgt. Faye Schouten of UW-Whitewater's campus police will continue to serve as the interim director of university police and police chief until then.
Kiederlen replaces former police chief John Reid who left UW-Whitewater in July for California State University Channel Islands to become its director of public safety and chief of police.
