Attend Mexican history lecture by Patrick McNamara Oct. 16

Released: October 15, 2007

Mexican history, culture and politics will be in the spotlight Oct. 16 when UW-Whitewater hosts a lecture by Patrick McNamara, a member of the history department at the University of Minnesota. He will share his recent research, "Mexico's Old Regime and the Independence Celebrations of 1910."

McNamara's lecture will discuss efforts by Mexico's turn-of-the-century government to use the centennial celebrations of Mexico's Independence to support its own politics. The research also examines the way in which local groups have crafted their own interpretations of how Mexico could best realize the promise of its founders.

"The history department is very happy to have Dr. McNamara on campus," History Department Chair Seth Meisel said. He added, "I think this is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore how historians choose their projects and conduct their research as well as help them understand the personal commitments and intellectual interests that are needed to produce original scholarship."

The lecture, free and open to anyone, will be held in Hyer Hall, room 324 from 5:15-6:15 p.m. For more information, contact Meisel at (262) 472-5150 or meisels@uww.edu.
