Ashley Pick and Shedrick Daniels named "Outstanding Seniors"

Released: October 17, 2007

Leadership, campus involvement, school spirit and community service are important aspects of student life at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Each year, the Reuben Klumb Award for Outstanding Seniors is given to two students who epitomize these characteristics.

The Klumb Awards are given in recognition of Reuben Klumb to honor his more than 25 years of dedicated work with Homecoming. These awards are given to an outstanding senior female and senior male. Students are evaluated based on four areas: demonstrated leadership and scholarship, campus involvement and activities, promotion of school spirit and extra-curricular activities/community service.

Candidates must be in senior standing and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher. A panel of judges, selected by the Homecoming Steering Committee and the Senior Awards Coordinator, interviews the applicants and judges them on personality, extra-curricular activities, promotion of school spirit and achievements.

The 2007 Senior Award winners are Ashley Pick and Shedrick "Rick" Daniels.

Ashley Pick

Being a student athlete is demanding enough in itself, with long practices, competitions and trying to keep up with classes, but Ashley Pick manages to compete in two sports, maintain a 4.0 GPA in accounting and participate in numerous student activities. The UW-Whitewater senior from Monroe is a member of the Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Team and the Women's Cross Country Team. Along with her sports, she also participates in Beta Alpha Psi, the Honors Program and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Pick's outstanding academic history is another great achievement. She has been recognized six times in the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and is a member of numerous honor societies including Golden Key, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Eta Sigma and Beta Gamma Sigma.

"It feels great is be recognized for my achievements and involvements as a student at UW-Whitewater," Pick said. "I am very honored to receive the award."

Shedrick "Rick" Daniels

Serving the Black Student Union, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Whitewater Student Government, Daniels has proven his qualifications for campus involvement. The Campus Assistant also works with Brother to Brother and the Student Optimist Club. In 2006, the journalism major from Milwaukee was selected to attend the Oxford Conclave in Oxford, England with former Chancellor Martha Saunders, Interim Chancellor Richard Telfer, Dean of Student Life Tisa Mason, Associate Vice Chancellor Barbara Monfils and Dean of Business and Economics Christine Clements. Daniels had the opportunity to discuss global ethics and represent UW-Whitewater as the facilitator for the student presentation. Being selected for the Senior Award is only natural considering Daniels' campus involvement and leadership skills.

"This award is the biggest accomplishment of my life up to this point," Daniels said. "It means so much to me to receive this honor. Words can't express how truly blessed I am to be at this university."

Pick and Daniels received their award at the Variety Show during Homecoming week. For more information about the winners and their awards contact Leadership Development at 262-472-2633.
