Southeast Asian Lecture Series focuses on Hmong women

Released: October 30, 2007

The Southeast Asian Heritage Lecture Series gives people the opportunity to learn about Southeast Asian culture. This year's theme, "Hmong Women: We're Still Our Mother's Daughter," will feature Hmong women who will speak about their challenges and accomplishments in life.

Minnesota State Sen. Mee Moua will come to UW-Whitewater Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. in Hyer Hall 320 to speak on the topic of "A Journal from the Mountains of Laos to the Capital of Minnesota - My Mother's Hopes and My Daughter's Dreams."

"Last year, we brought in a lot of men to speak," said KaBao Lee, graduate coordinator for the Southeast Asian Support Services. "This year, we wanted to elaborate more on Hmong women in the professional world, the advantages and disadvantages about being both a minority and a woman and achieving success in a career. It's important to know the challenges that women go through, plus being a minority."

April is Asian heritage month, but speakers will be featured at other times of the year. Kou Vang, a writer and an artist, will speak Tuesday, March 4 on "Hmong and American, Embracing Dual-Identity" in the Fern Young Terrace at 4 p.m. with her art displayed throughout the day. Bao Vang, anchor and producer for News Channel 7 in Wausau, will speak Tuesday, April 8 about "The New Hmong Woman: I can Cook, Clean, and Make a Million Dollars" in Hyer Hall 320 at 4 p.m. To conclude Asian heritage month, UW-Whitewater students will perform an "Asian Heritage Cultural Show" Tuesday, April 29 at 4 p.m. in the Hamilton Center.

All of the lectures are free and open to everyone. Professors are encouraged to bring their classes, and student organizations are also encouraged to participate in the lectures.

UW-Whitewater Academic Support Services, Southeast Asian Support Services, the Southeast Asian Organization, Student Affairs, Thai Student Organization, Chinese Student Association, the Multicultural Student Council, Graduate Studies and Continuing Education, and the colleges of Communications, Business and Economics, Education, and Letters and Sciences are sponsors of the Southeast Asian Lecture Series.
