UW-Whitewater to actively support troops throughout November
Released: October 26, 2007
We have all seen the bumper stickers plastered on cars as well as the yellow ribbons wrapped around tree trunks in the spirit of supporting troops. Throughout November, UW-Whitewater and the community will have the opportunity to actively support its troops.
The kick-off event is on Oct. 29, four student veterans will sit on a soldier panel to discuss their experiences while serving in Iraq. "The Iraq Experience: UW-W Veterans' First-Hand Accounts" will begin at 7 p.m. at the Light Recital Hall.
This is the first time this event is being held on campus. "It is important that we support the men and women that are away from their loved ones protecting our freedom," Kila Carrier said.
Students and the community will be able to write a letter of thanks to the troops that are currently serving in Iraq. Blank thank-you cards are available if a class or department would like to participate as a group. Donation boxes will also be set up in local businesses and on campus for a "Collection of Items in Needs" to collect various items that are needed by our troops. Student and community member can also make monetary donations for shipping costs and supplies.
"We want to get the truth out there from the actual veterans. It is much better to hear the stories of the people who actually fought then what you see on the ten o'clock news. We want to raise awareness and teach others to support our troops and veterans as they fight as well as when they return home to their loved ones," Carrier added.
