Time capsules from Baker, Salisbury and Sayles halls opened

Released: October 15, 2007

Several decades of rust and memories were revealed during a Friday, Oct. 12 ceremony when the time capsules once buried below Baker, Salisbury and Sayles halls were opened in the Atrium of the Greenhill Center of the Arts.

The program began with comments from Director of Alumni Relations Tommie L. Jones, Jr. '02 and Interim Chancellor Richard Telfer. Emeritus Professor of History Richard Haney offered an historical view of the people the buildings were named after: Lucy Baker for Baker Hall; President Albert Salisbury for Salisbury Hall; and Nettie Sayles for Sayles Hall.

The ceremony culminated with the revealing of the contents of the time capsules that were unearthed when the three halls were razed to make way for the new College of Business and Economics building, Timothy J. Hyland Hall.

"Whether it's 50 years or 500, the opening of a time capsule carries much anticipation," Interim Chancellor Telfer said.

Each capsule, though buried several years apart from each other, carried a common theme for its contents. Each contained an issue of that year's Royal Purple student newspaper, student handbooks, and other pamphlets, many of which are still distributed in a more modern version today.
