Student to travel to Bay St. Louis to help with Hurricane Katrina relief
Released: November 19, 2007
Every year since Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, Whitewater has sent multiple groups of volunteers to Bay St. Louis, Miss. to help with disaster relief. Students, faculty and community members will have another opportunity to travel to Bay St. Louis and help rebuild Jan. 2-9.
"Although Hurricane Katrina happened two years ago, there is still a great need for financial and voluntary assistance," said Whitewater police Sgt. Mike Ciardo. "People are having a difficult time receiving money from the federal government and their insurance companies to offset costs. It's a good humanitarian effort."
Ciardo said that there has been a lot of improvement in Bay St. Louis and people are starting to come back, but there are still areas that are untouched.
"Whitewater has embraced Bay St. Louis as a sister city and has committed to do anything we can for them until they become whole," Ciardo said.
There are a variety of things to do, and no expertise is needed to go on the trip. Skills can be learned once people get down to Bay St. Louis.
Ciardo will assist people in getting plane tickets and lodging for the trip. The deadline for reservations is Nov. 20. Ciardo can be reached at the Whitewater Police Department, 262-473-0570.
