Released: November 1, 2007
School psychologists ensure children learn in safe and supportive environments by understanding school systems and effective teaching. After years of dedicated service and a commitment to school psychology, Professor Jim Larson was presented a lifetime achievement award from the Wisconsin School Psychologists Association (WSPA).
Larson is the coordinator of the school psychology graduate program at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, a position held since 1990. Prior to teaching at UW-Whitewater, Larson was a school psychologist in the Milwaukee Public Schools for 14 years and lead psychologist with the Milwaukee schools' Violence Prevention Program.
"This award was a well-kept secret and something I did not expect," Larson said. "I feel very honored and humbled to have won this award."
The award was presented at the 2007 fall WSPA convention Oct. 25-26 in Madison. The convention is designed for practicing school psychologists and offers various workshops with guest speakers from across the United States. Topics included mental health promotion, addressing reading, math and language problems, violence prevention, neuropsychological issues and more.
Larson is also a member of the Scientific Board of the Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment of Victims of Violence. As a researcher, his primary focus includes the treatment of aggression in children and adolescents, school violence prevention and training procedures in school psychology.
