UW-Whitewater athletics continue to dominate

Released: November 9, 2007

Even though the weather is getting cold, three of the Warhawk intercollegiate athletic teams are red hot. The men's football and soccer teams as well as the women's volleyball team are all at the top of their respective divisions and have guaranteed their spots in the postseason.

The women's volleyball team (31-4) clinched the WIAC conference title with a strong win against UW-Platteville at the conference tournament held at UW-Whitewater Nov. 3. Adding an exclamation point to an already stellar season, coach Stacy Bourdeau and senior Carley Polk were named WIAC Coach and Player of the Year, respectively. The Warhawks defeated Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) (30-26, 30-23, 30-22) Nov. 8 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, and will go on to face either Bethel (Minn.) or St. Benedict in the second round at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 at St. Thomas University in Saint Paul, Minn.

The Warhawk men's soccer team will also be participating in the postseason this fall. The Warhawks (15-2-2) are ready to get back on the winning track after a tough 4-1 loss to UW-Oshkosh that ended a 16-game winning streak in the last game of the regular season. That game is in the past now and they are focused on beating rival Dominican University in the first round of the NCAA Regional at 11 p.m. on Nov 10. The Warhawks already beat Dominican 1-0 once this season in a match held Oct. 24 at UW-Whitewater and are at home again in this match, as UW-Whitewater is hosting regionals this year.

Last but certainly not least, the UW-Whitewater football team (8-1 overall, 6-0 in the WIAC) will also be making an appearance in this year's postseason. The team recently clinched both its third consecutive WIAC conference title as well as a playoff berth with a win over UW-Stout on Nov. 3. The Warhawks are looking to close out the regular season with a win at home against UW-Platteville on Nov. 10. Kickoff is at 1 p.m., but the pre-game and post-game festivities will ensure a full day of fun for everyone. The NCAA Division III football playoffs will begin on Nov. 17, so keep an eye out for game times and locations.
