Encouraging students to step out of their comfort zone and embrace diversity is an important initiative at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Multicultural Student Council and the student chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) have recently partnered to develop a year-long program dedicated to bringing students of diverse backgrounds together.

Working hard to promote diversity on the UW-Whitewater campus, the 2007-08 diversity theme "Warhawks Unite, We are Different-We are One"will unite the campus and be displayed to inform students about various events and activities. The first Warhawks Unite event, a game night, will be held Friday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Wells Lounge.

"We are excited for the first event of the semester," Carolina Calvillo, chair of the Multicultural Student Council, said. "We decided to do a game night because it's a good way to encourage students to interact with one another through friendly competition and food."

The different student organizations working hard for the success of this program include the Black Student Union, Southeast Asian Organization, Latinos Unidos and AMA.

"We want to encourage everyone to come together and get to know each other," Katie Zimmerman, executive board member of AMA, said. "We are all excited to do this, as it is an important initiative on our campus."

Everyone is welcome to attend the event and get to know other students. AMA and the Multicultural Student Council also plan to open the 2008 spring semester with the first multicultural prom Feb. 9, 2008 in the Old Main Ballroom in the University Center.
