Wheelchair basketball team gets season rolling
Released: November 5, 2007
When a team wins one championship, they are considered a power in their sport. When a team wins four championships in the last five seasons, they're considered a dynasty. The UW-Whitewater wheelchair basketball team has done that and is looking to win another one this season.
This coming season should be like every other year in our program, we go in expecting to compete for the national championship," said Head Coach Tracy Chynoweth. "I've told our team that the only thing more difficult than winning a championship is defending one."
The team has the tools to repeat and more. There are several returning players from last year's championship team, including Matt Scott, Scott Harrington, Nate Hinze, Rob Welty, Jeremy Campbell, Jaime Mazzi, and Jay Baker. During the off-season, the team also went out and brought in three new high-caliber players from across the globe, including Andre Bienek from Castrop-Rauxel, Germany, Darren Skuse from Sydney, Australia, and Allon-Dor On from Israel.
"We feel good about who we have, last year is gone and this is a whole new year," said Chynoweth.
No matter who the Warhawks play on the court this season, it promises to be exciting. Those who have seen them play know how much effort and skill is put in to each aspect of the game. For those who haven't yet taken the chance to see this dynasty in action, the chance is coming soon. The season began Nov. 2 in Marshall, Minn. The team's first home games are Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, when it hosts the University of Alabama, University of Arizona, University of Missouri, Oklahoma State University and the University of Texas-Arlington.
