Young Auditorium receives Target Corporation grant

Released: December 3, 2007

The Young Auditorium, a 1,300 seat performing arts center in Whitewater, WI, has been awarded a $2,000 grant from the Target Corporation.  This funding will support the Horizons Matinee Series, which since 1985 has educated, engaged, and entertained 403, 696 K-12 students in southeastern Wisconsin.

Ben Strand, development director for the Young Auditorium, noted that, "Target Corporation is truly one of the pillars of the business community.  They have exhibited their dedication to our community not only through their financial support, but also by encouraging their Team Members to volunteer with the Young Auditorium.  A group of Team Members joined us as volunteer ushers last year and we look forward to their continued support in the future."

Since 1985, the Horizons Matinee Series (HMS) has been providing the best in world class performance art to K-12 students in southeastern Wisconsin.  Schools from as far away as Mineral Point, Wisconsin to Harvard, Illinois travel to Whitewater in order to attend HMS events.  Performances range from chamber music, theatre, dance, musicals, and science-based theater.  Coordinator of Education and Outreach Shannon Dozoryst commented, "Teachers are provided with study guides before the performances that reinforce teaching opportunities before and after students come to the auditorium.  Schools from Beloit to Fort Atkinson have also been engaged through our increased in-school outreach opportunities."

Schools, teachers and Parent Teacher Organizations who wish to receive information about the Horizons Matinee Series performance should contact Coordinator of Education and Outreach Shannon Dozoryst at 262-472-1432.

This grant is part of ongoing efforts by Target to strengthen families and communities throughout the country. Since opening its doors, Target has given 5 percent of its income to organizations that support education, the arts and safe families and communities. Today that translates to $3 million every week.

"At Target, we are making a real difference every day through our grant-making program," said Laysha Ward, vice president, community relations, Target. "We're proud to partner with the Young Auditorium as part of our ongoing commitment to give back to the communities where our guests and team members live and work."
