Taxpayer Clinic gives students real-world experience

Released: December 10, 2007

Real-life job experience while still in school is valuable to any student. Accounting students at the graduate level receive first-hand experience doing accounting work at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Low Income Taxpayer Clinic.

Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITC) provide two main services. One service is communicating taxpayers rights and responsibilities to taxpayers who speak English as a Second Language (ESL). The other service is providing assistance to low-income taxpayers who have controversies with the IRS. UW-Whitewater's LITC has been in service since January 2007.

People who have received notices from the IRS are encouraged to use the LITC's free services. Services include assistance for earned income credit controversies, filing status and dependents, IRS audits and appeals, IRS examination notices and IRS collection notices.

"By working at this clinic, our graduate students are gaining valuable first-hand experiences with starting and promoting a business, providing presentations to ESL taxpayers and working with taxpayers to resolve controversies with the IRS," said assistant professor of accounting Rick Cummings.

Appointments can be scheduled over the phone and all information is kept confidential. To make an appointment, call (262) 472-1293 or toll-free 877-UWW-LITC.

The campus' Low Income Tax Clinic is supported by a federal grant from the IRS.
