Students continue excellence on CPA exam
Released: February 12, 2008
Accounting students at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater continue to excel on the Uniform CPA Exam. In 2006, UW-Whitewater ranked in the top 25 for candidates passing all four parts on the first attempt, according to the latest candidates performance listing by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. The only other Wisconsin school to rank in the top 25 was the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
UW-Whitewater ranks 22nd with approximately 55 percent of first-time candidates passing all four parts of the exam.
"We are particularly proud of the length of time that our accounting programs have been successful," said Robert Gruber, accounting department chair. "Other programs flash into the top 25 once in a while, but we're consistently ranked with national powers like UW-Madison, the University of Illinois at Champagne, the University of Texas at Austin, Brigham Young University and Wake Forest University."
Impressively, UW-Whitewater students rank No. 6 in the nation on the "Financial Accounting and Reporting" section of the exam with nearly 78 percent of first-time candidates passing. Additionally, the students rank No. 8 in the nation on the "Business and Environmental Concepts" section with 81 percent of candidates passing.
"In 2005, we ranked nationally No. 8 and No. 6 on the "Auditing and Attestation" and "Regulation" sections of the Uniform CPA Exam," Gruber added. "Not only do our students do well overall, but they also excel on each individual section of the exam."
Closer to home among Wisconsin universities, UW-Whitewater continues to lead the state in the number of CPA candidates taking and passing the exam. In 2006, approximately 43 percent of UW-Whitewater students passed all sections taken compared to the national average of 28.8 percent.
