Annual Cesar Chavez Celebration April 10
Released: April 8, 2008
The UW-Whitewater community will celebrate the life of Cesar Chavez with the help of Latino Student Programs (LSP) and Latinos Unidos (LU) in the University Center Ballroom 275 on Thurs., April 10 from 4-5:30 p.m. The yearly event acknowledges and celebrates the life and many contributions and accomplishments of Chavez, a national and international heroic figure who fought for the improvement of working conditions, wages and the rights of migrant workers.
"We would like to encourage everyone to attend this celebration because the Hispanic population has grown tremendously and is continuing its presence in American life and culture," said Nelia Olivencia, director of Latino Student Programs. "Our society is becoming increasingly bilingual, and I think it would be useful for everybody to be educated about this group and where its culture came from."
A panel of UW-Whitewater Latino alumni will discuss the importance of Latino Pan-Americanism in the United States and recent movements for the Dream Act, which is a proposed piece of federal legislation that would provide legal status to long-term illegal immigrants who wish to attend college or serve in the armed forces. Dance group "Admira la Musica de las Americas" (ALMA) will provide entertainment at the event and refreshments will be served.
LSP and LU encourages all faculty, staff, student and community members to join in the celebration of the life of one of the most important Latino leaders in U.S. history. For more information, contact Latino Student Programs at 262-472-1913.
