Released: April 25, 2008
If you want to get noticed on campus, following the leader might not be such a bad idea after all. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is in the process of chartering a national leadership honor society that will recognize superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character. Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) is a leadership honor society that was established in 1914 at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. ODK is designed to acknowledge leaders in various phases of college activities that recognize the versatility of campus life.
The first nine charter members selected are senior Heather Bonnett, senior Gwynne DeBoer, graduate student Sara Dood, senior Derek Henze, senior Melissa Hogan, senior Jessica James, senior Jonathan Schellin, senior Elaine Spata and senior Eric Weier. They have been chosen for their academic accomplishments as well their leadership roles in one of five areas of campus life:
-Scholarship-Athletics
-Campus or community service, social and religious activities and campus government
-Journalism, speech and the mass media
-Creative and performing arts
ODK membership is awarded to undergraduate junior and senior students, graduate students, faculty, staff, administration and alumni. Students must be in the top 35 percent of their respective class.
“As an honor society, ODK provides opportunities for members to provide service to the university and the national association throughout one’s lifetime,” said Tisa Mason, dean of Student Life and ODK alumna. “ODK offers continued service and leadership development, while reflecting a more well-rounded recognition program in alignment with the university’s goals.”
Until the ODK charter is earned the group will be known as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Leadership Honor Society. For more information on ODK, visit www.odk.org or contact Tisa Mason at 262-472-1533.
