Academic Advising and Exploration Center named outstanding program
Released: May 19, 2008
Not many universities can say that their students are efficiently advised the moment they walk on campus. At the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, however, academic advisors and their support staff pride themselves on placing all first-year students on a direct track to graduation. For its work, UW-Whitewater’s Academic Advising and Exploration Center (AAEC) has received the Outstanding Institutional Advising Program Award from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).
“We are thrilled that we won this award,” Bruce Bukowski, director of the AAEC, said. “This is a very difficult award to win. This shows that UW-Whitewater is committed to academic advising for its students.” The center not only serves first-year and undeclared students, but it also targets at-risk students, student athletes, probation and international students. “I think our broad range of services are what really catapulted us to the top of the list,” Bukowski said.
The National Survey of Student Engagment shows that UW-Whitewater first-year student advising satisfaction has increased on a four-point scale from a 2.57 in 2002 to a 3.3 in 2007. The AAEC will receive its award Wed., Oct.1, 2008, at the annual conference in Chicago.
