Baseball Earns Trip to College World Series

Released: May 20, 2008

As many students see their school year coming to an end, the UW-Whitewater baseball team isn’t ready to go home yet.

The Warhawk baseball team earned its fourth trip to the NCAA Division III World Series by defeating St. Scholastica 21-13 in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional championship game on Saturday, May 17. The Warhawks will enjoy a home state advantage over the other seven teams with the tournament being held at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. The last time UW-Whitewater was in the NCAA Division III World series was in 2005, when the team won the national championship.

The Warhawks (39-8) will face Linfield College (33-11) in their first tournament game at 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 24. If they win they will play again at 7:45 p.m., Saturday, May 25. If they lose they play at 1:15 p.m., Saturday, May 25.

“We know they have good team speed, good defense and an exceptional pitcher,” head coach John Vodenlich said.

Linfield is going to need good pitching and defense against the Warhawks’ red-hot offense that has outscored its opponents 56-21 over its last four games.

“The main similarity between this team and the 2005 National Championship team is the maturity of our core senior group,” Vodenlich said. “Nine of these guys were on the 2005 team that went to the World Series and we expected to get back here again. It isn’t our intention to just go and enjoy the experience. Our intention is to go and win games. Our intention is to win a national championship.”
