First Black Greek fraternity celebrates 40th Anniversary
Released: May 8, 2008
Brothers of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity celebrated the 40th Anniversary of becoming UW-Whitewater’s first historically Black fraternity, April 17-19.
“The week began with activities from our undergraduate chapter including a voter registration table, woman appreciation night, Greek yard show and party,” said Mikquon Turner, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity alumnus. “The alumni came in on Friday, April 18 in conjunction with the Weekends in Whitewater recreational center night and the highlight of the weekend was the 40th anniversary program in the UC Ballroom.”
Fraternities and sororities are built upon solid principles and are great ways to get involved on campus. They are also a great way to develop leadership skills.
“I had the joy of being on the UW-Whitewater campus at a time when Greek life was very much a part of the leadership roles on campus.” Turner added.
Alpha Phi Alpha was established more than 101 years ago at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Turner believes the UW-Whitewater chapter will continue to prosper and create great leaders just as it has since its establishment on December 4, 1906.
“My advice for students at UW-Whitewater is to always remember what you came to the university for,” Turner said. “When I stepped foot on the campus my ultimate goal was to graduate and to let nothing get in the way of that goal. Students should always keep this in mind no matter if you are in a fraternity or not.”
