Softball, baseball head begin post-season runs
Released: May 8, 2008
As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. But in the case of the softball and baseball teams at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, the best is yet to come as the two teams begin their post-season runs this weekend.
The Warhawk softball team begins its NCAA championship run against Coe College May 8 in Rock Island, Ill. The team finished the season 30-8 and is currently ranked No. 17 in the National Coaches Association Poll after capturing the WIAC regular season crown. Individually, sophomores Amanda LeBeau and Lauren Cruz were also honored by being named to the All-Great Lakes Region First Team, as was junior Amy Gahl, who was named to the Second Team.
The men’s baseball WIAC Championship Tournament begins Friday, May 9 and will be held at Witter Field in Wisconsin Rapids. The Warhawks finished the regular season with an astonishing 31-6 record, good enough to give them their sixth outright WIAC regular season crown in eight years. The team is currently ranked No. 8 by D3baseball.com and No. 5 by the American Baseball Coaches Association poll.
UW-Whitewater's participation in the WIAC baseball tournament on May 9-10 will be carried live by WKCH radio, 106.5 FM. Gary Douglas and Tom Pattison will call the action. The games will also be streamed on the Internet from the UW-Whitewater athletics Web site.
“It's truly been an outstanding year for Warhawk athletics,” said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Paul Plinske. “We couldn't be more proud of all our teams. They have raised the bar to unprecedented levels by competing among the nation's elite. Congratulations to our student-athletes and coaches on a job well done.”
