UW-Whitewater Captures 2007-08 WIAC All-Sports Trophies
Released: May 22, 2008
For the first time ever the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has won the combined Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Sport trophy and for the eighth time the Warhawks won the men’s trophy.
The Warhawk women finished a close second to UW-Eau Claire for the women’s trophy.
UW-Whitewater won conference titles in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, women’s tennis and volleyball.
These successes put UW-Whitewater over UW-Eau Claire by an astounding 9.5 points for the overall title. The men’s trophy was last won by UW-Whitewater in 2006.
“This is a phenomenal accomplishment,” Athletic Director Paul Plinske said. “What is equally impressive is that the women finished second overall, which is their highest finish ever. We, in the department, are very excited about every sport doing so well in a conference which is arguable the strongest in the country.”
Interim Chancellor Richard Telfer lauded the teams. “The quality of all of our sports teams is outstanding. I am so proud of these student-athletes and I want them to know that their success on the playing field encourages success across campus,” Telfer said. “This has been an exceptional year for Warhawk athletics. I thank the Athletic Department, coaches, staff and the student-athletes for all of their hard work and for making us all so proud to be Warhawks.”
These student-athletes also put a lot of hard work into their studies too. The student athlete grade point average for 2007-08 was 2.99. There were also seven WIAC Scholar Athlete Award winners this year. They are:
- Jessica Farrar, women’s tennis
- Ashley Pick, women’s cross country
- Justin Beaver, football
- Rebekah Nelson, volleyball
- Jon Schellin, track and field
- Jennifer Rogers, track and field
- Ben Prather, baseball
Student-athletes are nominated to receive the WIAC Scholar Athlete Award based on athletic, academic and professional honors.
UW-Whitewater athletics’ success this year didn’t just happen by chance.
“What makes our athletic department so successful is our outstanding coaches, top-notch facilities and super institutional support,” Plinske said. “All of these factors contribute to bringing the best and brightest student-athletes to UW-Whitewater.”
