Released: June 16, 2008

A football national championship and successful seasons for women's volleyball, basketball, softball and men's baseball propelled the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks into a sixth-place finish with 810 total points in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings for the 2007-08 year.

The sixth-place finish is the highest ever by UW-Whitewater and the point total is the most ever accumulated by a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  Among WIAC schools, UW-Eau Claire finished 10th with 628 points, UW-Stevens Point finished 13th with 587.25 points and UW-La Crosse finished 18th with 566.50 points.

"It was a phenomenal year for intercollegiate athletics," Athletic Director Paul Plinske said.  "As we put UW-Whitewater on the national map, we are excited about the foundation that has been laid for future national success.  We feel this recognition will allow us to further attract highly qualified student-athletes."

UW-Whitewater earned points for winning the Division III football title (100), finishing second in women's volleyball (90) and softball (90) and finishing third in women's basketball (83) and men's baseball (83).  The university also earned points for national championship participation by men's indoor track and field, soccer and basketball, wrestling, women's and men's tennis and women's outdoor track and field.

The university's previous best in the Directors' Cup was 15th in 1999-2000.
