Dean covers Presidential election with Wisconsin Public Radio

Released: September 23, 2008

One of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s own Richard Haven, dean of the College of Arts and Communication, is back covering the political campaign trail this year. Haven, a political analyst and guest expert for Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR), is covering his third presidential election for the talk radio station. Haven has been with WPR since 2000, making regular appearances on the show “Your Views in the News.” His work with WPR includes analyzing great American speeches as well as attending speaking events for presidential candidates.

With the current presidential election heating up, political analysts from all over the world are voicing their opinions on radio and TV, podcasts and in weekly columns. Some practitioners offer a fair and balanced viewpoint, while others take on a more influential position. Haven prefers the former. “I try to be as unbiased as I can while providing a historical, professional and critical perspective,” he said.

Haven recently attended a Democratic meeting with Senators Hilary Clinton (D-NY) and Barack Obama (D-IL) during the Wisconsin primary as a member of the press. While there he got the chance to voice his position on various issues as well as interview politicians from Wisconsin. On October 10, 2008 at 4 p.m. Haven will make his next appearance on “Your Views in the News” where he will be analyzing great American speeches and providing political insight to callers.

When asked about the current election, Haven made the comparison to years past. “This election reminds me of the election of 1980,” he said. “Obama reminds me of a young Ronald Regan, he needs to prove himself before he has the public’s undivided attention.”
