Plan to attend Warhawk athletics opening weekend Sept. 5-7

Released: September 2, 2008

The weekend of Sept. 5-7 will be a monumental one for Warhawk athletics, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and the Whitewater community. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will consist of dedications, championship banners and of course, sports. UW-Whitewater invites everyone
to come to all of the events taking place.

“It will be an exciting weekend for Warhawk Athletics,” Athletic Director Paul Plinske said. “From the grand opening of the 'new' Perkins Stadium to the new Multi-Sport Complex, our student-athletes, coaches and staff are beaming with excitement, ready to show off what we have worked to establish. Alumni, community members, UW-Whitewater students and staff are invited to join us as we celebrate these new facility openings. It's a great time to be
a Warhawk."

Last year, the Warhawk football team found out that the third time was the charm when they finally beat Division III juggernaut Mount Union College in the national championship game. This year, the Warhawks have the target on
their back as defending champions; however the goal of raising a trophy in Virginia in December at the Stagg Bowl still remains.

The Warhawks start their quest for a second straight title when they take on St. Xavier at 7 p.m., on Friday Sept. 5, at Perkins Stadium, which features brand new state-of-the-art artificial field turf. Before the game, at 6:45 p.m., there will be dedication ceremony at midfield honoring the Kachel
family for their contributions to the new Kachel Family Sports Complex. During halftime, last year’s seniors will be on hand to see the raising of the 2007 national championship banner. After the game, at 10 p.m., there will be a fireworks show that will hopefully be in celebration of a Warhawk victory.

Football continues Saturday with a high school game between Milwaukee Vincent High School and Whitewater High School at 1 p.m. Prior to kickoff, there will be another dedication ceremony for the Kachel Family Sports Complex this time with the Kachel family, Whitewater High School principal and the superintendent. At halftime, there will be a punt, pass and kick competition and after the game, the community can play flag football games that will feature the use of the scoreboard, the sound system and an
announcer.

Football won’t be the only sport on display that Saturday as soccer will also be a main part of the weekend. At 2:15 p.m., Fiskum Field, the new soccer complex, will be dedicated with Bob Fiskum in attendance. At 2:30 p.m., the field will see its first action when the women’s soccer team takes
on Lakeland College. After that game ends, at 4:30 p.m., the
nationally-renown UW-Whitewater marching band will take the field for a performance. At 5 p.m., the men’s soccer team will get their turn when they take on Lakeland College. After the game, jerseys will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to benefit the Arthritis Foundation.

In addition to football and soccer, the cross-country and tennis teams will also get in on the action with meets of their own.

The weekend is guaranteed to be fun-filled and action-packed for athletes and spectators alike. Here is a full schedule of events for the weekend:
