UW-Whitewater celebrates 'Day of the Dead' Oct. 30
October 29, 2008
With Halloween fast approaching, there is no better way to celebrate this ghoulish holiday than with goodies and entertainment. Latino Student Programs at UW-Whitewater is hosting an event celebrating Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 7-9 p.m. in the Hamilton Center of the University Center.
The Day of the Dead is a Hispanic holiday that celebrates the lives of the deceased. This celebration allows families to gather in prayer and remembrance of their loved ones who have died.
There are typically pictures of the deceased, and their favorite foods and drinks are served during this celebration, said Coordinator Pilar Melero.
The Day of the Dead event will combine two events into one, as part of the ultimate bilingual experience. There will be a performance by the ALMA Dancers, followed by the premiere of a play written by UW-Whitewater senior Jessica Makely and junior Maria Rodriguez, under the direction of Melero. The play is based on the short story El Vampiro Del Rio Grande written by Roberto De la Torre Hurtado.
Out of the bilingual writing groupPanacea de la Palabrathat we formed came the idea to do a play based on this particular short story, Melero said. The play is a blend of cultures, is completely bilingual and is very visual. We have a group of very dedicated individuals that deserve a lot of credit for their hard work.
Following the dance performance and play, Mexican writer Roberto De la Torre Hurtado will speak briefly about his short story and answer any questions.
In the spirit of the Day of the Dead, an altar will serve hot chocolate and pan de muerto (bread of the dead). So get a jump-start on your Halloween festivities and celebrate the Day of the Dead with food, fun and a learning experience.
