Political science department holds election panel Oct. 29

October 27, 2008

The 2008 presidential election is closer than you think.  With less than one week until Election Day, it’s important to talk about the issues now before casting a vote.

To help students, faculty, staff and the public make an informed discussion, the political science department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will hold a panel discussion, Election 2008: Let’s Talk About Issues, on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. in the UC Summers Auditorium. The panel will discuss a range of issues including economy, foreign policy, health care, education and more.

“It is going to be a look at the major issues facing the country and how the candidates stand on them,” Political Science Department Chairperson Susan Johnson said.

In a time of technology, it’s common for many people to turn to TV or Internet as a source for information.  As an alternative, the panel discussion is a great opportunity for students and the community to hear firsthand from experts that study various issues and policy areas.

“I think it is important for the political science department to offer the university and community an opportunity to learn about the major issues facing the country, and how each presidential candidate proposes to address them,” Johnson said. “Also, a lot of what we see on TV and on the Internet is peoples' opinions.  What we hope to do is cut through the opinions and offer facts to help people assess the candidates themselves.”

Panel speakers include political science professors Jolly Emrey, Zohreh Ghavamshahidi and Susan Johson, and economics professor Jeff Heinrich.

The panel discussion Election 2008: Let’s Talk About Issues is sponsored by UW-Whitewater’s Political Science Department.  For more information regarding the panel discussion please contact Susan Johnson at johnsons@uww.edu.
