Management majors encouraged to attend career preparation event Oct. 29

October 24, 2008

With the economy sliding further into recession, it’s become more challenging to find and land a job. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is offering career preparation for all management majors to help with the job search.

All general management, human resource and operations management major students are invited to attend this year’s free career preparation event on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 5:15-8 p.m. in the Fern Young Terrace in the Irvin L. Young Auditorium.  The event will educate and prepare students of what to expect and what kinds of opportunities should be taken advantage of while job searching.

“Students will gain a more clear, concrete, experienced-based understanding of what to do and what to avoid when pursuing career opportunities.” Management Professor Jerry Gosenpud said. “The information from the event is highly likely to benefit students in the future because it will provide realistic information about how to manage their careers.”

The career preparation event will incorporate a speaker panel, “Career Preparation, Given Today’s Economy” that will include three high-level human resource professionals from Kohler, Foot Locker and Adecco Staffing. There will also be brief discussion sessions that include, “How to find an internship that meets your goals” and “Negotiating a career, from people who are doing it.”  These sessions are designed to accommodate all students and meet various needs depending on academic status.  Time for social networking will conclude the event and allow students more one-on-one time with panel speakers.

“I feel this event is beneficial because it’s an opportunity for students to ask questions without scheduling private interviews,” UW-Whitewater Senior Scott Zanio said. “Students can get the big picture and also learn from others’ questions.”
