UW-Whitewater receives honorable mention in 'Entrepreneurship Magazine'

November 12, 2008

Over the past two years, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has taken steps in strengthening its entrepreneurship business program. For this, the university received an honorable mention in Entrepreneurship Magazine. This entrepreneurial milestone is only the start of what UW-Whitewater has planned for the future.

UW-Whitewater received an honorable mention in Entrepreneurship Magazine for its general business, entrepreneurship emphasis undergraduate program.

“Being mentioned in Entrepreneurship Magazine shows that our entrepreneurship efforts are paying off,” Irvin L. Young Professor of Entrepreneurship Jimmy Peltier said. “The strong collegiate entrepreneurship chapter on campus has helped to develop solid curriculum and motivate faculty.”

“Entrepreneurs are a major engine in Wisconsin's economy,” College of Business and Economics Interim Dean Lois Smith said. “Under Jimmy Peltier's leadership as the Irvin L. Young Professor, entrepreneurship has grown in visibility and energy. This recognition from Entrepreneurship Magazine shows the quality of students and programs that we have in this field at UWW.”

UW-Whitewater’s current undergraduate entrepreneurship emphasis is only available to general business majors. Peltier and entrepreneurship faculty have worked to develop coursework for an entrepreneurship major program. Coursework includes: Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Marketing, Entrepreneurial Financial Management, Small and Family Businesses, Innovation and Technology, Small Business Consulting and Entrepreneurship: New Ventures. The major program was passed by the University Curriculum Committee and is expected to launch in fall 2009.

“Once the entrepreneurship major is fully approved, efforts will be put behind creating an entrepreneurship minor and will be available for everyone at the university to take,” Peltier said.

It’s also projected that in fall 2009 an entrepreneurship learning community will be available. The community will be for incoming freshmen with an interest in entrepreneurship. Students will live together in the same residence hall and attend similar classes together.
