Help make the holidays warm with the gift of giving
December 9, 2008
Members of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater community have the opportunity to make someone’s holiday season warm and joyous by lending a hand to those in need. Campus organizations including Gamma Alpha Omega sorority, the University Bookstore and Willy’s Hawk Shop, St. Jude’s Ironman Team 2008 and the Student Entertainment Awareness League (SEAL) are making it possible for everyone on campus to volunteer.
Students really find ways to give a little bit here and there, especially during this time of year students are aware of the greater need, Leadership Advisor Kim Clarksen said. They do a lot of good things, and this is what I am most proud of in being connected with this campus.
Here’s how you can show your support:
The Gamma Omega sorority is hosting its third annual Mitten Tree fundraiser, now through Dec. 19. Interested students can donate new and/or gently used winter hats, gloves and scarves on the tree located at the front entrance of the Andersen Library. Donations will go to the Whitewater Food Pantry.
- Holiday cards for the military
Students can give back to our troops by creating personalized holiday cards to individuals serving in the military. The University Bookstore and Willy’s Hawk Shop are looking to share in the holiday joy by collecting these cards for those overseas. Nonperishable items will also be collected for the Whitewater Food Pantry. Contributions can be brought to the University Bookstore in Moraine Hall, or Willy’s Hawk Shop in the University Center.
The St. Jude Ironman Team 2008, consisting of juniors Angela Johnson, Kaitlin Larimer, Rachel Iverson, Lauren Mastantuono, Libby Marino, Amy Marino and Keara Lahiff, participated in UW-Whitewater’s annual St. Jude Marathon and raised nearly $3,000. For those interested in supporting St. Jude, donations are still being collected. Contact Lauren Mastantuono at 708-560-6205 for more information.
SEAL is collecting school supplies for children in preschool through high school in Ghana, Africa. Recommended donations are activity books, pens, pencils, sharpeners or other school-related supplies. Collection places are the front desks of residence halls, the Career and Leadership Development desk in the University Center and Wal-Mart. Donations are being accepted until Wednesday, Dec. 10; however, the donation period is flexible. Contact Dakota Cox at (847) 800-7377 or CoxDS02@uww.edu for more information
