Undergraduate Research Day set for Sept. 25

More than 40 students who spent their summer exploring research topics from economics to biology will present their findings at Undergraduate Research Day at UW-Whitewater.
Students will display their work and answer questions on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the James R. Connor University Center Hamilton Room. The event is open to the public.
"Undergraduate Research Day showcases the incredibly creative and academically advanced work that students are able to do," said Simone DeVore, interim director of undergraduate research and associate professor in special education in the College of Education and Professional Studies.
While science is a hot topic for research every year, many other subjects drew the attention of curious students in all four colleges who are ready to share their findings.
Grant Francis, a sophomore in the College of Letters and Sciences, did his research on the modern edition of the Renaissance play. Derrek Grunfelder-McCrank, a junior in the College of Business and Economics, looked into the recession and banking employment in Wisconsin.
In the College of Arts and Communication, junior Wilson Dorsey researched race and the rhetoric of multicultural intervention. Amber Ball, a junior in the College of Education and Professional Studies, looked into the sustainability of child care centers.
"To see students exploring current topics that aren't just interesting from a research perspective, but from a community and citizen perspective, is really cool," DeVore said.
From 80 to 100 students are hard at work this fall on research that will be presented next spring.
UW-Whitewater has a national reputation for its Undergraduate Research Program, which pairs faculty mentors with students on inquiry-driven research scholarship and creative activities. Many Warhawk researchers are chosen each year to participate in the National Conference on Undergraduate Research to share their work.
