ur dayDedicated, driven and hard working students from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will present their extensive summer research at this fall's Undergraduate Research Day on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the James R. Connor University Center Hamilton Room.

UW-Whitewater was one of the first UW schools to adopt the Undergraduate Research Program more than 20 years ago, and the program continues to grow with more than 60 students expected to display their research.

"The word has gotten out about how great research is because of students," said Catherine Chan, director of the Undergraduate Research Program. "They take initiative and the demand for student research has increased."

From social sciences and intervention studies, to economics and cutting edge multispectral drone imagery, there will be a wide range of topics from an array of majors.

"Many research topics focus on answers to social issues in different ways," Chan said. "These topics affect everyone and are extremely relevant."

Undergraduate Research Day is a learning experience for all. Chan said a recent student survey revealed that undergraduate research allows students to advance their knowledge and be more competitive in their field, but in addition to career skills, learning the value in communication is a benefit to students.

Whether a student presents research independently or with a group, a mentor accompanies the research process.

"The students build a relationship with their mentors, and it's a great opportunity to begin networking to open up new doors in the work world," Chan said. "The relationship-building skills help with both writing and speaking."

In addition to Undergraduate Research Day, the Undergraduate Research Program at UW-Whitewater is hosting a T-shirt design contest. Submissions will be accepted until Nov. 18, and the winner will be announced at spring Undergraduate Research Day. Students who attend the 31st Annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research at the University of Memphis on April 6-8, 2017 will wear the winning design.
