UW-Whitewater hosts first International Student Conference

April 27, 2012

International students at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater have organized the first Regional International Student Conference.

"This is something that's never happened before, and it's something that needed to be done," said Sara Amiri, an international student from Morocco and co-chair of the conference.

The conference looks to build a global community for students from other countries studying in the United States. International students from around the Midwest will join at UW-Whitewater April 27-28 to hear speakers, attend informational workshops and celebrate diversity.

About 100 students are expected to attend, with groups coming from UW-Madison, UW-LaCrosse, UW-Oshkosh, Beloit College, Wisconsin English as a Second Language Institute, and the Janesville Academy for International Studies. Attendants will network with others and learn how they can make the most out of their experience abroad.

"We want to start communication between campuses, reach beyond our borders and learn from different experiences, " said Amiri.

An award ceremony will be held to honor student organization programs that help international students succeed on their campuses.
