Faculty travels enhance Peace and Justice Studies minor

Three UW-Whitewater faculty members spent a week this summer at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at Notre Dame University in Indiana.

They're bringing back with them new knowledge and experiences to enhance UW-Whitewater's Peace and Justice Studies minor, now in it's second year.

Faculty members say training in this field can benefit any student, regardless of major.

"Peace studies is helpful on many levels and relates to all professions," said David Reinhart, lecturer. "No matter what you do professionally, you will need to deal with conflict."

"Business students who minor in Peace and Justice Studies can use their knowledge at the community, national and international levels," said Zohreh Ghavamshahidi, professor. "Education students can learn how to prepare future generations to handle conflict. Art and communication students can spread the culture of peace and justice," Ghavamshahidi said.

Faculty members spent the week attending seminars, conducting research and discussing the future of peace studies at UW-Whitewater. They also learned about the inner workings of the institute and the growing field of peace studies research.

Participating faculty included Ghavamshahidi, Reinhart and Margarita Alario, associate professor.
