Expo to explore careers in retail industry

February 21, 2013

Hyland HallUniversity of Wisconsin-Whitewater students of all majors are invited to the Careers in Retail Expo, to be held Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 5-7:45 p.m. in the University Center Hamilton Room.

The event is co-sponsored by Kohl's Department Stores and UW-Whitewater Career and Leadership Development, and will include information tables by retail companies such as Target, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Steinhafels, American TV, Maurices and Enterprise.

The expo will begin with a short presentation about the retail industry by a Kohl's senior vice president, followed by author and career consultant Susan Caplan, who will talk about personal branding.

The first 150 people to attend the event will receive a free copy of Caplan's new book, "Marketing Yourself to the World."

"There are several untrue myths about retail," said Ron Buchholz, director of Career and Leadership Development. "The field of retail doesn't mean you are going to sell something. These companies need accountants too."

UW-Whitewater students will have chances to network with several retail companies, learn about the field and seek out possible internships.

"More and more companies are starting to recruit interns from UW-Whitewater, so I would advise all students to participate, regardless of major," said Buchholz. "I often hear people say they never intended to work in retail, but there are great jobs in this field that don't require sales experience."
