Travis, who has been associate dean since 2005, will move into the college's top job July 15, replacing Dean Mary Pinkerton, who is retiring.
Stephanie Abbott, a political science major from Rice Lake, is finishing her college career with a prestigious national award -- the Newman Civic Fellow award -- given to only 181 students in the country.
Students with any major or minor may earn the 17-credit disability studies certificate, which will become available this fall. It requires classes in special education, sociology and political science, and offers elective choices in communication, special education, informational technology and English.

Students Abby Hlubek, Becky Lang, Jenna Kenny and Lauren Davy volunteered their time April 19-20 by driving to Minneapolis to provide all of the children's programming for the Midwest Family Equality Conference. They paid for a van and hotel room by fundraising. Parents at the conference said the care and programming our Warhawks provided was exceptional and allowed parents to attend workshops without having to make separate childcare arrangements.
Kudos to the UW-Whitewater Forensics Speech Team, which took 11th place in the National Forensics Association National Tournament, April 17-23 at Marshall University in West Virginia. The Warhawks, who compete in Division II, set a new team record for points scored at nationals. Students competing were Quinn Levandoski, Kristin Kasper, Emily Shrout, Craig Nelson, Brian Schanen, Hannah Farajpanahi and Colton Larsen.
Kudos to the UW-Whitewater DECA chapter for its success at the International Career and Development Conference April 24 -27 in Anaheim, Calif. Students Adam Branaugh and Kyria Smith won first place in the website design competition, and Brett Guendel and Jodi Straka won first place in the B2B competition. Eleven UW-Whitewater students made the finals.
Kudos to Zachary Herriges, economics and German major, who won an $8,500 scholarship through the Hessen-Wisconsin Student Exchange at Goethe Universität Frankfurt am Main, the seat of the European Central Bank and the German Federal Bank. Herriges will study economics and German literature there next year.
Kudos to Anthony Gulig, associate professor and chair of the history department, who was awarded a certificate of merit for outstanding academic advising by the National Academic Advising Association.
Kudos to Jo Ann Oravec, associate professor of information technology and business education, who presented "Privacy Considerations of GIS in U.S. Corporate and Community Contexts: Case Studies, Legislation, and Policy Trends" at the UW-Madison Geospatial Alliance Summit on April 25.
The Spring Faculty and Academic Staff Recognition and Retirement Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, in the Old Main Ballroom, University Center room 275. Social hour begins at 4:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and program beginning at 5 p.m.

The FP&M Landscaping and Grounds Department is soliciting donations to provide bird seed for the bird feeding tree located adjacent to the Young Auditorium. A donation of $10 or more will be used solely for the purchase of bird seed. All donors will receive a certificate and a bronze leaf, which will be stamped with words that the donor designates and placed on the tree.
