Kudos to Catherine Chan, director of the Undergraduate Research Program and associate professor of biological sciences and chemistry, and Seth Meisel, associate dean of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education, who won a $330,429 UW System Growth Agenda for Wisconsin grant. Co-investigators on this project include Bruce Eshelman and Anneke Lisberg of the Biological Sciences Department; Kara Meissen, senior advisor in the Academic Advising and Exploration Center; Kelli Danielski, Learning Communities coordinator; and Lynsey Schwabrow, director of Institutional Research. This project will provide an integrated STEM learning, problem-based STEM inquiry, and advising support network for under-prepared freshmen who declare biology and chemistry as majors at UW-Whitewater.
Kudos to Katrina Yan Liu, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, who was awarded a $75,000 Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad titled "Understanding Contemporary China through Collaborative K-16 Curriculum Development Study Abroad." This project will fund 12 K-12 teachers for a five-week program that includes intensive Mandarin language study and a four-week curriculum development program in China this summer.
Kudos to Donna Vosburgh, assistant professor of occupational and environmental safety and health, who won the "Best of Session" award at the 2014 American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition in San Antonio Texas, May 31 - June 5.
Kudos to Carol Terracina-Hartman, lecturer in communication, who was awarded a Summer Research Fellowship from the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University. Her project traces environmental news coverage in news magazines during the 1970s, following events such as Earth Day and the Clean Air Act legislation. The paper has been accepted to a special mass communication history edition of The Communication Review.
Kudos to Manuel Ossers, professor of languages and literatures, whose book "La expresividad en la cuentística de Juan Bosch: Análisis estilístico/Expressiveness in Juan Bosch's Short Stories: A Stylistic Analysis" (Lewiston, NY: The Edwin Mellen Press, 2010), is found in 636 libraries in the United States and abroad, making it the most widely held work on Juan Bosch in libraries around the world.
The Whitewater Arts Alliance will host "Eyes of Whitewater," an exhibition of the works of UW-Whitewater faculty and staff photographers, to be on display Thursdays through Sundays from June 5 to June 29 at the Cultural Arts Center, 402 W. Main St., Whitewater.
