Commencement set for Dec. 16

More than 774 students will march across the stage to receive their degrees at winter commencement. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at Kachel Fieldhouse. The event marks the first time in its almost 150-year history that the university will confer a doctoral degree.

Campus snow removal plan

The first new snow over the weekend provided some winter beauty for the last days of classes and the first days of final exams on the UW-Whitewater campus. (Photo by Craig Schreiner)

The Facilities Planning and Management team reminds everyone to slow down and take precautions during winter weather events, such as staying 50 to 100 feet from plows, wearing proper attire and footwear, and keeping a shovel and winter emergency kit in your vehicle.

Campus Kudos

Kudos to graduate students Alicia Waring, Chelsey Schulenburg, Jenny Scherer and Dorian Anderson, who have been accepted to attend the highly competitive NCAA 2018 Emerging Leaders Seminar, Jan. 24-26, 2018, at the NCAA national office in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Kudos to Beth John, director of first year experience, who won the ACPA Multiracial Network Anniversary Award, which recognizes individuals who have demonstrated leadership in advancing multiracial awareness in higher education.

Kudos to S.A. Welch, associate professor of communication, who has been appointed as student recruitment and mentoring program coordinator for the International Listening Association.

Kudos to UW-Whitewater, which will share in a $150,000 grant from the National Association of System Heads. The grant will be used to advance the UW System’s work on making high-impact educational practices (first-year seminars, learning communities, service learning, research with faculty, internships and field experiences, study abroad, and culminating senior-year experiences) available to underrepresented minority, low-income, and first-generation students.

Kudos to Susan Elrod, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, who served as an adviser, from inception to completion, to the California State University System project "Creating a Unified Community of Support: Increasing Success for Underrepresented Students in STEM." Final reminder for graduating seniors to take SOAS survey

Graduating seniors are reminded to take the Senior Outcomes Assessment Survey (SOAS). An email was sent on Wed, Nov. 15 (from the Registrar's Office) with a link to the survey. You may notice an SOAS hold on your WINS account. This is a reminder to complete the survey by Friday, Dec. 15. Holds will be removed every three days. Please contact assessment@uww.edu with questions.

Get great handmade, functional artwork created by faculty, students and alumni from the Department of Art and Design's Ceramics Guild and Alloy metalsmithing organizations in the Greenhill Center of the Arts Atrium, Dec. 11-12, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Administrative Fellowship opportunity

The Offices of the Chancellor and Provost are pleased to announce the Administrative Development Program for 2018-19 and invite interested eligible faculty to apply to become Administrative Fellows. The program goals are to 1) provide interested faculty members with opportunities to broaden their understanding of and experience in higher education administration, 2) build more leadership capacity on campus, and 3) diversify administrative leadership. LEAP workshops

All UW-Whitewater faculty, staff, and students are invited to form teams and apply to participate in this year's LEAP workshop series. LEAP (Liberal Education & America's Promise) is a campus-wide initiative aimed at helping teams develop action plans to enhance campus collaboration and improve student learning and success. The application deadline is Friday, Dec. 8.
