The UW-Whitewater Campus Garden, led by the sustainability office under the direction of Wes Enterline, has been named a recipient of the 2024 Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents Diversity Award. The team will be recognized at this Friday’s Board of Regents meeting in Madison.

For the second straight year, UW-Whitewater will welcome Special Olympics Wisconsin athletes and coaches to campus for the State Summer Games. The event is scheduled to take place June 6-8, 2024. A fundraiser for the Special Olympics, the 25th annual Polar Plunge, will be held in Whitewater on March 9.

Terry Tumbarello, executive director of University Housing, won the William B. Sweet Distinguished Service award from the Upper Midwest Region-Association of College and University Housing Officers (UMR-ACUHO). Tumbarello, who is in his 26th year at UW-Whitewater, leads a team of nearly 500 people who serve Warhawk students.

We are set to celebrate the achievements of our graduates at 10 a.m. this Saturday, Dec. 16, as proud families and friends gather for the 2023 December commencement ceremony. Approximately 620 students will cross the stage to receive their degrees. The ceremony, about two hours long and presided over by Chancellor Corey A. King, will be held at Kachel Fieldhouse in the Williams Center.

First-gen students are proud trailblazing students whose parents did not earn a four-year degree. More than one-third of the Warhawks on the Whitewater campus and more than one-half on the Rock County campus are first-generation! The annual First-Generation College Celebration on Nov. 8 commemorates the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and promotes postsecondary access, retention, and completion for today’s limited-income, first-generation college students.

We showcased our talent, enjoyed a bonfire with fireworks, strutted down Main and marked a day of victory in the George Chryst Memorial Bowl, with the Warhawks securing the Miner's Axe Trophy over UW-Platteville.

During high school, AJ Fitzpatrick accelerated his passion for competing in wheelchair basketball by reaching out to former national champion and UW-Whitewater alumnus Derrick Bisnett. When it came time for AJ to find his next team, Bisnett connected him with Jeremy “Opie” Lade, former coach of UW-Whitewater Men’s Wheelchair Basketball, who helped him to become a Warhawk, excel as a college athlete and discover new ambitious goals to chase. As part of Welcome Week, Chancellor King will address the campus at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, in Young Auditorium. This event will be a moment of celebration to recognize colleagues, reflect on achievements of the past year and set the tone for the next academic year. Additionally, researcher and author Zach Mercurio will give a presentation to kick off the campus initiative U Matter. Everyone matters at UW-Whitewater — together, we all have the power to ensure those around us experience how much they matter. This is the official launch of the U Matter initiative on campus.

Undergraduates Tania Limón Ramirez, Miles McIntosh and Mireia Hernandez Justicia were among just nine students selected to travel to La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica this summer as part of the Research Experience for Undergraduates program. The three-week REU program focuses on underrepresented students and is operated by the Organization for Tropical Studies, a consortium of universities and research institutions. The National Science Foundation pays for the students’ travel, housing and meals and gives them a stipend. Andrea Romero, associate professor of biology, environmental science, and women’s and gender studies and her husband, Brian O’Neill, associate professor of biology, served as faculty mentors on the research trip.

For the seventh consecutive year, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has been named among the Colleges of Distinction — a national honor that recognizes campuses for exceptional teaching and dedication to student success. This year the university is one of only two colleges in the state to be awarded a badge in affordability, one that focuses both on an institution’s costs and student outcomes as it aims to assist cost-conscious students and parents in navigating the complex landscape of college financing.

The Warhawk club baseball team finished second overall in the Division I National Club Baseball Association World Series. To earn their spot in the national championship, UW-Whitewater (ranked 8th) defeated No. 1 Utah State, No. 5 and defending champion Florida State, and No. 7 Virginia Tech. They fell to No. 2 Penn State in the final by a score of 6-3. Congrats on a great season, Warhawks!

Nicholas Gulig, an associate professor of languages and literatures, was recently named to the new two-year term of State Poet Laureate of Wisconsin.

As the State Poet Laureate, Gulig will serve as an ambassador of sorts for the literary craft, while simultaneously undertaking a project that will be completed by the end of 2024. He will give talks at various seminars, workshops and similar venues throughout Wisconsin.

A unique new collaboration is bringing a nursing program to UW-Rock County! The program, complete with a full faculty, clinical coordination expertise, and an innovative curriculum that integrates classroom instruction with instructors from Edgewood College with hands-on clinical and simulation experiences, is set to launch with its initial cohort in the fall of 2023. It is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and approved by the Wisconsin Board of Nursing.

Coming off a large win, Warhawk Football has secures a share of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title for the 39th time in program history. The Warhawks set a number of program records in the win, including points in a game, surpassing the previous record of 75 that had stood since 2006.

University Health and Counseling Services is excited for our first-ever Sexual Health Carnival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the Ambrose Health Center. While sexual health can be uncomfortable to discuss, this sex ed for the college student is an opportunity to come and learn — no need to ask anything. We’ll have a variety of information on important topics that impact students as well as resources. Several community partners will participate as well. Come walk through the health clinic at UHCS to learn — and ask questions if you want — and then go out back to enjoy some carnival popcorn, candy and games and to see real miniature horses! All participants will receive a coupon for a free Culver’s frozen custard. This is an event you don’t want to miss!

For the first time in 13 years, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk Marching Band soared into Perkins Stadium with new uniforms, thanks to Glenn Hayes, professor of music, and uniform designer and alumnus Michael Cesario. The new uniforms, which feature a design that evokes the wings of a hawk, is the latest the two have collaborated on over the years.

Esports is a fast-growing club on the UW-Whitewater campus where students can join online or in person. Participants become better esport athletes and push themselves to pursue their passion. A newly opened Esports Studio, with 25 accessible gaming-equipped computers, is located in the lower level of Wells West residence hall and open to both students and community members.

Rocio Duchesne-Onoro, associate professor of geography, geology and environmental science, worked with undergraduate students to conduct research with implications for urban planning. Duchesne-Onoro says the goal of the project, titled “Spectral Characterization of Urban Trees in Southern Wisconsin,” is to identify key features of all the trees within a city. Urban planners and forest managers are interested in what trees to plant or remove and the extent of their canopy to reduce the heat in cities. The most effective way to identify specific tree species is from above, using satellite and aerial imagery. Duchesne-Onoro’s team measured each leaf’s radiation emission and performed a statistical analysis of that data — similar to how fingerprints are unique to every human.

In a come-from-behind victory, the Warhawks defeated Wichita State University 3-2 at the Intercollegiate Team Championships, held April 20-23 at Stardust Bowl in Addison, Illinois. Donovan Thomas, psychology and journalism major, was named most valuable player of the tournament. Shawn Wochner, who has coached the Warhawks for 12 seasons, coached his final match Saturday as the Warhawks won the title. The game will air on CBS Sports Network at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10.

The women's basketball team clinched the program's fourth trip to the Final Four since 2008 with a 68-62 victory against UW-Oshkosh Saturday night. When she got to UW-Whitewater, chemistry major Robin Witt found that her love of biochemistry and weightlifting combined to help her achieve her academic and personal goals. The Deerfield, Wisconsin, native is working with chemistry professor Christopher Veldkamp on a research project whose findings, “Structural Insights into Molecular Recognition by Human Chemokine,” were published as in the journal Biochemistry. As a competitive weightlifter, Robin is competing in the Arnold Classic — the university nationals — and hopes to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

UW-Whitewater's Active Minds has won Chapter of the Year! This award is well-deserved, as efforts from this group can be seen across campus and throughout the City of Whitewater. In addition to self-care and mental health activities, this group has brought awareness projects to campus, organized walks, events, and guest speakers, and planted more than 3,000 yellow tulips to represent hope. The UW-Whitewater chapter was chosen among 600 other chapters across the United States.

Meet “HawkRover.”

This autonomous driving test vehicle, invented by Assistant Professor of Computer Science Haijian Sun and his students, uses a combination of lasers, cameras and wireless technology. Dale Splinter, professor of geology, geography and environmental science, works with his students to test tributaries suspected of bringing high levels of phosphorus and other pollutants into Geneva Lake in southeastern Wisconsin. Splinter’s undergraduate research project tested 16 streams around the lake from May to October in 2021. Along the way, his students gained valuable hands-on experience collecting and analyzing data.

Thor Manson, an Army veteran who enrolled at UW-Whitewater after serving in Iraq, is the first Warhawk to be named a Harry S. Truman Scholar. Manson, who joins 61 other graduates from Stanford, Howard, Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Notre Dame and other institutions in winning a 2021 Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation award for graduate studies, will attend Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., this fall.

Sun's project hopes to improve the safety and efficiency of smart cars.

The spring 2021 Virtual Global Experiences Fair is live now and runs through Saturday, May 1. Students have the opportunity to learn about hundreds of opportunities in more than 50 countries. Programs vary in length from a week to a year. There are virtual, travel study, internships and service learning programs as well. Students will also learn about funding options such as scholarships, grants and financial aid.

These plans will include in-person classes and on-campus living and dining experiences as they were pre-pandemic. In addition, plans include athletics, arts and other expected activities. The new legal studies major, housed in the Department of Political Science, includes coursework on constitutional law, gender and law, ethics, legal writing and research and a required legal internship.

David Fassbender is a physical education major from Slinger who's burning up the track, capturing his second straight All-America honor and finishing sixth at the NCAA Cross Country Championship, the highest finish ever for a Warhawk. And the hardworking runner is one of the almost 10% of UW-Whitewater students who use the university's acclaimed Center for Students with Disabilities. Far from holding him back, his autism gives him a singular focus — which helps him push past the pain and focus on the finish.

UW-Whitewater's Department of Theatre and Dance gave a private performance of DanceScapes '20 for cast and crew before the COVID-19 situation prevented this year's concert. An annual spring tradition, DanceScapes gives students and faculty the opportunity to play and experiment with the possibilities of what dance can be. Juk Bhattacharyya, professor of geology, has been chosen as one of three professors in the UW System to receive a 2020 Regent Scholar program grant for $50,000. Bhattacharyya helped lead a multidisciplinary team of students to develop and field-test a device to monitor landslide risk. The goal is a way to anticipate landslides — which cost billions of dollars in damages and kill millions of people around the world every year.

The UW-Whitewater Department of Music's Holiday Gala Concert, Dinner and Silent Auction takes place Saturday, Dec. 7, beginning at 6 p.m. in Young Auditorium. This annual holiday tradition is filled with joyous sounds from nearly every music department student ensemble throughout the college. Small ensembles will play prior to the performance, during intermission and immediately following the concert. The evening includes a dinner in the Kachel Center at 6 p.m., a silent auction in the Fern Young Terrace at 7 p.m., and the concert at 7:30 p.m. in Young Auditorium. All proceeds benefit the Music Department student scholarship fund.

UW-Whitewater aquatic biology students took a trip to the Allen Creek in Fort Atkinson on Oct. 15 to gather samples of aquatic life. Braving the cold water, students used various nets to collect the samples and examine the contents. “I was surprised to find so many water scorpions. They are a very alien looking water bug that breathes air through a long ‘snorkel’ attached to their abdomen,” said Brian O’Neill, assistant professor of biological studies.

It’s a safe, convenient way for URock students to live in residence halls and for Janesville area students to get to the Whitewater campus. And for some students, it makes all the difference between going to college or not.

Political science major Kayla White took part in a life-changing experience in Central America when she traveled to El Salvador to take part in historic presidential elections. The Dixon, Illinois, native seized an opportunity made possible by a professor who pointed her toward the internship and which led her to participate in a landmark Supreme Court case involving the country’s civil war.

UW-Whitewater political science major Kayla White did not believe she would succeed in college after a 2.3 GPA in high school. But through the encouragement of her professors, the Dixon, Illinois, native was named to the Dean's List six times, landed a prestigious internship, earned a college scholarship, graduated with honors and is headed to law school.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater American Marketing Association chapter was once again named the AMA International Chapter of the Year at the International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans on April 13. It is the eighth straight year that UW-Whitewater AMA has held or shared this title, and the 13th time since 2001. Competing against more than 380 chapters worldwide, this long-running streak is a significant achievement.
