Warhawk Shuttle

The free Warhawk Shuttle that runs between UW-Whitewater and UW-Whitewater at Rock County opens doors to students, faculty and staff on both campuses. It’s a safe, convenient way for URock students to live in residence halls and for Janesville area students to get to the Whitewater campus. And for some students, it makes all the difference between going to college or not.

UW-Whitewater police chief to lead FBI task force

As police departments across the country are abandoning an old reporting system and using a new and improved one, the FBI has tapped the police chief of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to help lead the way.

Matt Kiederlen is chairperson of the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Systems Beyond 2021 Task Force. In addition to his role as chair, he is representing all of the nation’s university and campus police officers.

Communities helping communities

UW-Whitewater learning communities gathered for their fall day of service on Friday, Sept. 20. They pledged their time to help neighbors by weeding gardens, making wreaths and winter clothing for donation and spending time with Fairhaven residents.

Campus Kudos

Kudos to Andy Yu, associate professor of management, who was appointed by the mayor of Middleton, Wisconsin, to serve a two-year term on the city’s sustainability committee. The group is responsible for researching and developing recommendations, guidelines, and policies for consideration and approval of the Common Council to take advantage of sustainability opportunities for the City of Middleton.

Kudos to Sheila Turek, associate professor of French, who has been selected as the recipient of the 2019 Distinguished Alumna Award from the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at George Mason University. She will be honored on Oct. 17 at the Country Club of Fairfax, Virginia.

Kudos to alumnus John Boie, academic advisor, who last month won a gold medal with Team USA at the Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru. Lindsey Zurbrugg won a silver medal at the same competition. A physical education major, she will play as a Warhawk this year. Both athletes hope to qualify again for Team USA ahead of the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Anneke Lisberg, associate professor of biological sciences, gave a TEDx talk where she discussed four new challenges that college students face, why they might disproportionately impact students with historically lower graduation rates, and how students can become better prepared to navigate them successfully. Music major Adam Drefs is serving as musical director for "The Musical of Musicals the Musical!" to be performed at the Beloit Civic Theatre Sept. 26-28 and Oct. 3-5.

Career fair prep workshop

Career and Leadership Development staff will present a workshop designed to help students prepare for the Hawk Career Fair 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, in Hyland Hall, room 2102.

Gilman Scholarship Information Session

Are you interested in studying abroad? Stop by McCutchan Hall, room 201, at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, to learn about the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. This grant program enables students of limited financial means to study abroad. Students with Pell Grants are eligible for up to $3,000 on study abroad experiences of three weeks or longer.

Is your resume ready to hand out at the career fair? Career and Leadership Development staff will be offering walk-up resume review assistance for students in preparation for the upcoming Hawk Career Fair. Stop by the Andersen Library between noon and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, and have yours checked out!

Approximately 170 employers will be present at the Hawk Career Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 2 in the Fieldhouse of the Williams Center. Students will have the opportunity to discuss internships and post-graduation jobs. A complete list of employers attending the fair can be viewed on Handshake.

Family Fest

Family Fest is next weekend! Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4-5, is a time for students, faculty and staff to host loved ones on campus. Enjoy all that the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has to offer!

Help us welcome future Warhawks

Our first Warhawk Preview Day takes place on Friday, Sept. 27. This is an exciting day for future students to explore campus in depth: touring the residence halls, meeting with academic departments, eating in our dining halls, and learning about how we help students succeed. Everyone plays a role in recruitment. It’s easy to get involved! Help us greet future Warhawks and their families by wearing purple, wearing your nametag, answering questions and offering a ready smile! Help make sure our offices, classrooms and campus spaces look their very best. Additional Preview Days are Oct. 25, Nov. 15 and Dec. 13.

Chancellor listening sessions

Please join Chancellor Watson from 4 until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the University Center Room 275 for the first campus listening session.

If the Sept. 25 date doesn’t work for you, there will be another opportunity from 10 a.m. until noon on Thursday, Oct. 24, in the University Center Room 275.

Student ambassadors needed

The World Languages and Cultures Program is seeking nominations for students to serve as language ambassadors for 2019-20. Language ambassadors are responsible for supporting and promoting the World Languages and Cultures Program, with the goal of increasing its visibility and the number of students studying one or more of our language offerings, which include American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

Self-nominations are highly encouraged.

Flu shots available

Flu shots are available now at the Ambrose Health Center. Students are $10 and faculty and staff are $15. Walk-in visits are welcome. Other opportunities include:

Room from noon to 3 p.m.

Relax, interact, create, learn and grow

The mindfulness group is a newly created group that is open to all and led by Wellness Educator, Hannah Foley. The first topic is an introduction to mindfulness and the wellness benefits. The following weeks will include hands-on activities to practice mindfulness. Stop by as you are able. This group will meet from noon to 12:45 p.m. every Wednesday at the Ambrose Health Center, room 2028.

Send Silence Packing

Send Silence Packing is an emotionally powerful exhibit that increases awareness about suicide prevention. Over 1,000 backpacks will cover the Wyman Mall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Each backpack represents a college student whose life was tragically lost to suicide. Mental health professionals will be on site to offer support.

Student speaker competition

December graduates are invited to apply for the honor of serving as student speaker at winter commencement.

Information Services, located on the main level of the University Center, provides all your mailing needs including envelopes, boxes, stamps and USPS Priority Mailers. Already have your items packaged and ready to go? Information Services can take your USPS and UPS letters and packages, which are picked up every weekday at 9:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.
