Focused on the Finish
David Fassbender is a physical education major from Slinger who's burning up the track, capturing his second straight All-America honor and finishing sixth at the NCAA Cross Country Championship, the highest finish ever for a Warhawk. And the hardworking runner is one of the almost 10% of UW-Whitewater students who use the university's acclaimed Center for Students with Disabilities. Far from holding him back, his autism gives him a singular focus — which helps him push past the pain and focus on the finish.

Kudos to Daniel R. Stalder, professor of psychology, who recently received an Action Teaching Award honorable mention from the Society for Psychological Study of Social Issues for his project, “An Online Support Group and Blog to Reduce Bias and Conflict.” Stalder said action teaching is a technique which educates students while contributing to peace, social justice and sustainable living. Stalder also writes a regular blog on human biases for Psychology Today Magazine, called “Bias Fundamentals: Tools to Keep Our Biases in Check.” In his most recent post, Stalder examines why some people resist social distancing, even in time of pandemic.
Kudos to Jo Ann Oravec, professor of information technology and supply chain management, whose contribution on privacy in the era of smart homes will be published as a chapter in the Springer Volume on Engineering and Philosophy series. The chapter is titled, “Privacy in an Era of Smart Homes and the Internet of Things (IoT).” Smart homes are residences where data is exchanged and collected in the course of running internet-connected appliances and other home systems.
Kudos to Carrie Merino, associate professor of counselor education, who has received the campus-wide 2020 Graduate Teaching Award along with $1,000 recognizing her accomplishments as a graduate instructor. Merino has taught an array of counselor education courses and is known as an innovator and a collaborative learner/teacher with students. Multiple students who commented in her evaluation mentioned Merino’s experience and passion. One wrote, “I love Carrie’s passion for social justice and helping our clients through the work we do.”
