The undergraduate major of communication sciences and disorders prepares speech-language pathologists for graduate work in speech-language pathology and/or audiology. Speech-language pathologists are specialists in normal and disordered human communication and swallowing. They provide service in educational, medical and related settings offering assistance to persons with speech, language and/or hearing disorders. For example, speech-language pathologists treat individuals who experience difficulty producing speech sounds (articulation), maintaining speech rhythm or fluency, or controlling voice production. They also treat language disorders also such as an inability to understand or use speech sounds, words and their meanings, and/or grammatical patterns. This also includes reading and writing and memory impairments. Speech-language pathologists are also trained to manage swallowing disorders across the lifespan.
