How to Compute your GPA
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated at UW-Whitewater by dividing total honors points by the total number of graded units attempted.
Honor Points ÷ Graded Units Attempted = GPA
See below for further explanation of honor points and units attempted.
Some important things to remember while viewing your unofficial transcript on WINS:
- The first column on your transcript contains a Course Listing for the term.
- The second column contains the overall number of course Units Attempted.
- The third column contains the number of course Units Earned.
- The last column (on the right) contains Honor Points.

- Your cumulative GPA should be correct on your unofficial transcript. However, your cumulative Units Attempted may not be the correct number of units for calculating your GPA. WINS includes Satisfactory/No Credit (“S”/”NC”) and Audit courses (“X”) in the cumulative total of units attempted, although it does eliminate these courses when calculating cumulative GPA.
If you wish to know your cumulative Units Attempted for calculating your GPA, subtract the total number of hours for any “S”/”NC” courses, “X” courses, expunged, and no credit and illegal repeated courses from the cumulative total Hours Attempted indicated at the bottom of your transcript.

Your transcript contains your cumulative GPA. To view your GPA for one term:

Honor Points
Honor Points are determined by the weight of the course times the weight of the grade. “S” is not weighted.
Units Hours x Grade Points = Honor Points
Remember, Grade Points are:
| A | 4.00 |
| A- | 3.67 |
| AB | 3.50 |
| B+ | 3.33 |
| B | 3.00 |
| B- | 2.67 |
| BC | 2.50 |
| C+ | 2.33 |
| C | 2.00 |
| C- | 1.67 |
| CD | 1.50 |
| D+ | 1.33 |
| D | 1.00 |
| D- | 0.67 |
| DF | 0.50 |
| F | 0.00 |
Examples of this could be:
ENGLISH 102, a 3 unit course.
An “A” in this course would equal 12 honor points
(3 units x 4 grade points = 12 honor points)
PEGNRL 192, a 1 unit course.
A “B” in this course would equal 3 honor points (1 x 3 = 3)
MATH 141, a 3 unit course.
A “C” in this course would equal 6 honor points (3 x 2 = 6)
PHYSCS 130, a 5 unit course.
A “D” in this course would equal 5 honor points (5 x 1 = 5)
GENED 110, a 3 unit course.
A “F” in this course would equal 0 honor points (3 x 0 = 0)
PSYCH 105, a 3 unit course.
An “S” in this course would not earn any honor points because courses with an “S” grade are not included in calculating GPA.
This student has earned a total of 26 Honor Points:
Units Attempted
Units Attempted are the total number of unit hours you attempted to complete. In calculating GPA only, the units attempted do not include classes with “S” grades, “X” (audited) courses and courses with repeat codes of "no credit" and "illegal repeat". (Please note: “S” grades do count toward graduation. They are excluded for the GPA calculation only.)
The student in the example above attempted a total of 15 units:
| Course | Units Attempted |
| ENGLISH 102 | 3 units |
| PEGNRL 192 | 1 units |
| MATH 141 | 3 units |
| PHYSCS 130 | 5 units |
| GENED 110 | 3 units |
| PSYCH 105 | don't use for calculating GPA |
| Total | 15 units |
Thus, the GPA for this student would be:
26 Honor Points ÷ 15 Units Attempted = 1.733
