Apple / Mac OS Security

Recently, Apple announced that there are security vulnerabilities in a couple of Mac OS components: Safari and iChat. These vulnerabilities can be fixed with simple security updates from Apple. To view all updates since Jan 25, 2005 visit http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61798.

While these vulnerabilities are not known to have destructive exploits in circulation, it is a possibility in the near future. iCIT recommends all Mac OS users install the available security updates on their machines.

Installing the latest updates

To install the latest updates on your OS 10 .3 and 10.4 machine, click on the Apple menu and select Software Update. On your OS 10.2 and above machine, open Preferences and select Software Update and click on Check Now. You will need your admin password to install this (in most cases, this is not your Net-ID). If you need help, please contact the UWW Campus Computer Helpdesk at 472-4357.

Additionally, to ensure you receive notice of future security updates, open the 'Software Update' panel of Preferences and check the box labeled 'Check for updates'. You can save time when updating by also checking the box for 'Download important updates in the background'.
