How does an instructor proceed when academic misconduct is suspected?

The first step is to talk to the student and discuss the matter. If you then believe that academic misconduct occurred, contact the Office of Student Life to see if the student has prior incidents. Then:

  1. an oral reprimand
  2. a written reprimand presented only to the student
  3. an assignment to repeat the work, to be graded on its own merits
 You have the authority to impose the sanction. Fill out the academic misconduct reporting form and send a copy to Mary Beth Mackin.
  1. a lower or failing grade on the particular assignment or test
  2. a lower grade in the course
  3. a failing grade in the course
  4. removal of the student from the course in progress
  5. a written reprimand to be included in the student's disciplinary file.
 You have the authority to impose the sanction but must first:
  1. Fill out the academic misconduct reporting form
  2. Send a copy to the student and a copy to Mary Beth Mackin
  3. Send a copy of UWS 14 to student.
  1. disciplinary probation
  2. suspension or expulsion from the university
 You do not have the authority to impose a sanction, but must recommend a sanction by writing a memo to Mary Beth Mackin, outlining the incident and your recommendation. Mary Beth will work with an investigating officer to initiate the review process.
