Earth Week 2012, April 23-26

Welcome to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's 2012 Earth Week celebration! This year Earth Day is on Sunday, April 22nd, so UW-Whitewater will be celebrating Earth Week between April 23th through 26st with a series of presentations and on-campus events including guest lectures, film showings, an energy efficient automobile show, and a green business and organization expo.  Earth Week organizers are inviting interested students, faculty, and community members to participate in the celebration.

The theme of this year's event is Connected by Rivers and Roads

Throughout American history, transportation has been an essential ingredient to the exploration, settlement, and expansion of American society to fulfill "Manifest Destiny."  Prior to the exploitation of fossil fuel resources, our nation's waterways were an integral part of our transportation infrastructure by providing routes for raw materials to travel to market and offered vital environmental services to the early settlements.  With the invention of land-based mechanized transportation, such as railroads and automobiles, and culminating with advent of the Interstate Highway System, our economic system is now fully reliant on our modes of transportation.  This year, we examine the environmental threats posed to our river systems and the environmental threats caused by fossil fuel vehicles and how we are responding to these challenges to remain Connected by Rivers and Roads.
