Credit by Examination

UW-Whitewater awards credit by examination for the following programs: Advanced Placement (AP), the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and the International Baccalaureate (IB). Students who have earned credit by examination at their original campus should have official test scores sent to the Office of Testing and Student Affairs Research. Scores will be evaluated for credit according to the equivalencies listed in UW-Whitewater's "Credit by Examination Opportunities" brochure. Course Repeat Policy

UW-Whitewater's Course Repeat Policy is very important since it may affect your admission to the university or to your intended major. Under this policy, you may repeat courses to improve your GPA; however, you may only repeat a course in which the first grade was D or F, and you may repeat a course only once. All subsequent attempts will be averaged with the first repeated grade for purposes of determining GPA. (This policy does not apply to course work granted elective credit.) You should be aware that this policy will be applied to your record in determining your grade point average for admission.

Advising Report (AR)

The most important document you will receive from the Admissions Office will be your Advising Report (AR). This is an analysis of all your transfer credit and how it applies toward graduation in the major you select. Since this document will be used in determining which classes you will take in your first semester at Whitewater, you will want to inspect it carefully and understand it thoroughly. Advisors will help you select your classes but it is essential that you understand the process. If you believe an adjustment should be made on your credit evaluation or AR, we suggest that you contact the Admissions Office before proceeding with advising and registration. Any adjustment in the credit evaluation must be requested within one year from the date of first UW-Whitewater enrollment.

Two Year College Transfer Policy

Courses taken at two-year campuses may be equated only to UW-Whitewater 100 (freshman) or 200-level (sophomore) courses. When a course taken at a two-year college parallels a 300 (junior) or 400-level (senior) course at UW-W, the course may be accepted as a general elective. A maximum of 72 credits may transfer from a two-year college to UW-Whitewater. Students who have accumulated 72 credits at a two-year college must earn at least 48 additional credits at UW-Whitewater and/or other four-year colleges to earn a baccalaureate degree. You may take courses beyond the initial 72 credits at a two-year institution but only with the permission of the dean of your college at UW-Whitewater.

Transfer students with an Associate of Arts and Science, Associate of Arts or Associate of Science Degree from the University of Wisconsin Colleges, Milwaukee Area Technical College, Madison Area Technical College, Nicolet Area Technical College, or any accredited State community or junior college who transfer at least 40 acceptable credits to Whitewater are considered to have fulfilled the University Proficiency and General Education requirements. Students who earned the Associate of Arts and Science from a UW College on or after Fall, 1991, will have satisfied the Diversity (Ethnic Studies) requirement as well. You should check to ensure that your final, official transcript indicates receipt of the degree. This policy does not apply to the Associate of Applied Science from vocational/technical colleges. PLEASE NOTE: some programs require additional general education courses that are not satisfied by the associate degrees as listed above. Following is a listing of these additional requirements:

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND COMMUNICATIONS MAJORS: Bachelor of Arts Degree candidates: must complete one course of at least two credits in Arts outside the major, plus six credits in Humanities courses. Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Music candidates: must complete one course of at least two credits in Arts outside the major. Bachelor of Science Degree candidates: must complete at least six credits in Natural Science/ mathematics in addition to the laboratory science/additional science-mathematics requirement. COLLEGE OF EDUCATION (TEACHER CERTIFICATION) MAJORS: students seeking licensure to teach are required to complete 40 credits of general education requirements. These are called PI 34 requirements and are named after the Wisconsin Statute which convers teacher certification. These requirements are not satisfied by the Associate Degree but may be incorporated into the Associate Degree curriculum. Specific information is listed on each transfer guide.
COLLEGE OF LETTERS AND SCIENCES MAJORS: Bachelor of Arts Degree candidates: must complete at least one year of a single foreign language at the college level, or have completed two years of a single foreign language at the secondary level. Plus, six credits at the junior/senior level must be taken in Arts, Humanities, Social Studies, or Womens/Ethnic Studies must be completed. Bachelor of Science Degree candidates: must complete two 4 or 5 credit laboratory sciences from 2 different disciplines, plus 5 or 6 credits of additional mathematics beyond Intermediate Algebra or a combination of mathematics beyond Intermediate Algebra and computer science. Students in the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) who wish to continue at UW-Whitewater may be eligible to transfer credit in one of the following ways:

If you are a student in the Associate of Arts College Parallel Program at Madison Area Technical College, Milwaukee Area Technical College, or Nicolet Technical College, you may transfer up to 72 credits to UW-Whitewater.
Students in the Wisconsin Technical College System may be eligible to transfer up to 30 credits of social science, communications, mathematics and science courses.
In addition to #2 above, students with an Associate of Applied Science from the Business and Marketing Division of the WTCS, 1985 or after, may be eligible to transfer up to 12 credits of business related course work. Other articulation programs exist for which additional credit can be transferred. Consult the Transfer Information System for further information (see below).
Students transferring from the Wisconsin Technical College System may be eligible for credit by earning appropriate scores on national standardized examinations (e.g. College Level Examination Program) or examinations developed at UW-Whitewater.

Applicants who already have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university are considered to have satisfied all General Education requirements, although Education majors may need additional courses. As a transfer student, you will be required to complete the following Core Requirements, depending on how many credits you transfer in to UW-Whitewater:

# of Credits Transferred UW-Whitewater Core Course Requirements 20 credits or less..............All General Education Core Courses 21-39 credits...................Two Core Courses to include World of Ideas 40 credits or more..............World of Ideas only Conferred Associate Degree......None (All General Education Requirements satisifed) from UW Colleges, Madison/ Milwaukee Area Technical College, Nicolet Technical College, or Illinois State Community or Junior College.

Eligible degrees include Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Arts and Science. Students who transfer without an associate or baccalaureate degree must complete all remaining proficiency requirements prior to completion of 60 credits. Transfer students with 60 or more credits must complete any remaining proficiency requirements during their first semester of enrollment.

UW Colleges Guaranteed Transfer Program

If you are a student at any of the UW Colleges, you should seriously consider participation in the Guaranteed Transfer Program. This program guarantees your admission to UW-Whitewater with junior status. Certain criteria apply, so check with a Student Services advisor for details. Please note this program guarantees admission to the university; it does not guarantee admission to specific majors or programs.
