Summer Program Grant Information

UWW departments are invited to apply for Intramural grants to run approximately 10 week summer undergraduate research programs. These will be modeled after previous years program that included participants from Art, Biology, Chemistry, Communications, Finance & Business Law and Geography & Geology, History and Health Physical Education Recreation and Coaching.

Program Description

Each of the four grants will be for approximately $10,000. Typically about half the funds would support stipends for two students and the other half would support a faculty mentor (including fringe costs, etc). However, departments may propose to allocate funds differently, with adequate justification. All student participants will be invited to apply for undergraduate research grants (max $500 each, $1000 for thesis students; April 27th competition) and a special round will be held if necessary. Departments may request funds solely for students, to work with a mentor supported by other research funds.

Expectations of Participating Departments and Individuals

Students are expected to conduct a significant, appropriately ambitious project that can lead to an NCUR conference presentation and potentially contribute to a professional meeting presentation or manuscript submission. Student participants will normally be sophomores or juniors who can follow up their summer experience with continuing research in the academic year. They will be expected to present at a summer program poster session in early August.

Participating faculty are expected to provide appropriate mentoring and where appropriate,  are encouraged to follow up the summer work with collaborative professional presentations or manuscript submissions; grant submissions are also encouraged.  Departments are encouraged to use the program as a building block toward, or in support of, increasing the participation of their students and faculty in the undergraduate research program.

Projects will be evaluated in terms of the quality of the proposed research, and the qualifications of the students and faculty.  In addition, departments which can demonstrate how the summer research fellowships will aid in designing new models for undergraduate research in the major, or as part of department activities to further promote undergraduate research, will receive particular consideration.  A project report detailing student researcher accomplishments and department initiatives to further undergraduate research will be due on May 1, 2010.

To Apply

By Wednesday 25 February 2009, interested departments should submit a two-page proposal (12 point font, 1 inch margins) as an email attachment to Denise Ehlen (ehlend@uww.edu).

Each proposal should include the following:

·         Overview of the proposed program with timeline.

·         List of personnel including: student GPA’s and other student qualifications; evidence of faculty research success and capacity for student mentoring.

·         Plans for programmatic follow-up and dissemination which will increase opportunities for students to participate in undergraduate research.

·         A budget, mentor C.V., and brief letter of department support from the department Chair may be added as appendices.
