FAQ on Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program

      Frequently asked questions regarding surf

      Q. Can I apply for more than one SURF?

      A. Yes, but we do not advise it. One of the criteria used in assessing your application is your enthusiasm for the project. If you apply to more than one project, your enthusiasm for each can be questioned. If you choose to apply to more than one SURF, please inform each of your prospective mentors that you are pursuing other SURF opportunities.

      Q. Can I do my SURF some place besides UW-Whitewater?

      A. UW-WhitewaterW students may conduct their SURF at another university or research institution. The application process is the same, and you request a letter or recommendation from research mentor at the off-campus location. The difference is that UWW cannot offer summer stipends to non-UW-Whitewater faculty mentors.

      Q. I'm currently a senior. Can I apply?

      A. Maybe. SURF is for continuing undergraduates only. If you will be an undergraduate student during the spring term, you are eligible to apply for SURF.

      Q. I'm a freshman. Do I have any chance of getting a SURF?

      A. Highly unlikely as we do evaluate applicants on their having sufficient coursework and experiences that will enable them to prepare strong proposal. If you have already taken a number of courses in your major, or have strong related experiences, you may be successful. It is recommended that freshman apply for to be a Undergraduate Research Assistant during the academic school year before applying for a summer research fellowship

      Q. You ask for letters of recommendation from my potential mentor but I don't know many professors in my area of interest. What should I do?

      A. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know your professors! Draft a short (one-page) resume of your activities, your interest in SURF, what you hope to do in your project, and make an appointment to meet with a teacher in your area of interest or the department chair. Faculty members like to see students take such initiative, and they may be willing to write a recommendation.
