FUNCTION

• To serve as a mechanism for ongoing collaboration and oversight of the social studies programs (secondary and elementary social science programs)
• To serve as a conduit of information regarding department policies affecting Social Studies Council constituents (e.g. public education policies, College of Education admission to professional education requirements, changes to BSE broadfield and discipline-specific majors/minors)
• To develop and implement the assessment plan for the Social Studies programs
• To prepare the Audit and Review Self-Study and Accreditation Reports for the social studies programs
• To oversee and recommend improvement of the social studies programs
• To improve and coordinate student advising in the social studies programs

STRUCTURE

• Committee will meet at least once each semester
• Chair & Co-Chair to be elected by the committee annually (one of these must be a representative from the College of Education, Department of Curriculum & Instruction)
• Position of Secretary rotates on a meeting-by-meeting basis

• Administrative representative from the College of Business and Economics, Appointed by Dean of the College of Business & Economics
• Administrative representative from the College of Education, Appointed by the Dean of the College of Education
• Administrative representative from the College of Letters and Sciences, Appointed by the Dean of the College of Letters & Sciences
• Department of Curriculum and Instruction – 2 Members: Elementary and Secondary Education
• Department of Economics
• Department of Geography and Geology
• Department of History
• Department of Political Science
• Department of Psychology
• Department of Sociology/Anthropology

Invited Optional: non-licensure related area representatives

• Department of Philosophy/Religious Studies
• Department of Women’s Studies
• Race and Ethnic Cultures Program

TERM

Representatives are to be appointed annually by each of the above constituencies.
